July 4th 2006 started like every other day in the last few weeks- violently. I was jostled awake, by the vibration of vehicles passing directly above my head. The cold, hard concrete pressed practically into my side straight through my thin sleeping bag reminding me of the cold hard reality of my situation. I wanted to stay in the sleeping bag, to stay warm....

The 3 foot wide concrete ledge under the Highway 24 bridge had been my home for the last few weeks. It was a roof over my head, and was close to public transit, a bathroom in a park, and the day labor firm where I looked for work each day. I would show up at 5 am and, if lucky, perform hard corporal labor until 5 pm. This would yield me a check of colse to .

Journey Necklace Meaning

Most days I would show up before dawn- wait eagerly- and not get any work. On these days I made the half mile hike to my beloved place- my fly from the harsh reality of my situation- the library. The library was the excellent place for person in my situation. It offered shelter, a water fountain, and restrooms. The soup kitchen was over the street. It even had free internet for job searches.

How I Went From Sleeping Under a Bridge to Running a Multi-Million Dollar Business-in One Day

There was one more thing it offered- more significant than shelter, more precious than water. The library offered Hope and certain inspiration- hidden in the words of the books it housed. That hope had been bringing me back, day after day for the last year. Sometimes the the hope, and motivation I gleaned from the books was the only thing that got me straight through the tough days. There had been a lot of tough days in the last year....

A year before I had been working as a protection guard in a casino in the mountains. It was great for person my age. I worked 4 days per week, made good money, and had plenty of time off- which I spent with family, with friends, or exploring the colse to mountains.

One day I came home to find by mom in the hospital- the victim of a car wreck. After any months in the hospital she came home- barely able to walk and on oxygen. A few month later she was diagnosed with terminal leukemia- and given only a few months to live. She decided she wanted to spend the time at home- with her family.

I quit my job to be with her, and to help in any way I could. She had no income, and many bills. The hamlet money she received from the crisis went to the attorney and hospital- but did not cover her living expenses, or ongoing care. Luckily I had money saved- but it dwindled quickly. When she died- I was broke- financially, emotionally, and spiritually. If it had not been for public Security- I would have had no money for cremation.

Every adversity carries within it the seeds of an equal benefit- and shortly before my mom passed I found mine one cold winter evening in a local bookstore. I had taken to reading as a boy and had never stopped. On that evening I was seeing for a book with answers. I needed to shape out how to turn my life colse to fast. I needed a place to stay, money, and a plan for getting myself back on my feet. I was a high school dropout with no skills, no money, no goals, and no plan for changing my life. I sat there for hours asking myself- "what do I do?" "How do I turn this around?" "Where will I sleep?" "How can I....?"

A shadow fell over the pages of the book I was reading.

I looked up to see an elderly man in ragged clothes. He looked like he'd been sleeping out out. Our eyes met. He walked towards me. I remember reasoning that he would probably ask me for money- money which I didn't have. I looked down hoping he wouldn't talk to me. It didn't work.

"Young man" he said in a raspy voice. I looked up to see him staring at me expectantly. My stomach knotted. And then he said something, something which stunned me. "Young man" he said and paused for what seemed like an eternity... "If you keep going where you're headed- you'll end up where you are going!" And, with that, he walked away.

I sat there stunned for about 10 minutes staring straight ahead, reasoning about his cryptic comment. I felt a strange sensation, a deadness in my and head, as though his words had somehow changed the entire doing of my mind.

Finally I picked up a book and opened it. My eyes fell upon the following quote-

" The significant problems we face can not be solved at the same level of reasoning we were at when we created them"

Something about the serendipitous appearance of the old man made the words hang in my mind. I read the book cover to cover. Everyday I returned-reading at least a book a day. I read books on motivation, real estate, business, certain thinking. What I found would at last turn my life beyond my wildest belief...I just didn't know it yet.

The winter was long- and cold. But warmed by the inspirational words I was reading, I made it to the next day, then the next- and I was now homeless. I focused on manufacture it to the next day, then the next. Every day I would read something new, learn something new, and apply what I was studying to my life.

Using what I'd been studying I managed to convince the owner of an out of a run down mobile home park to let me run the operation= even though I had no experience. I got a gutted mobile home and a division of any profits I generated. I spent the Colorado winter in a trailer with no heat , carpet, or water. I slept in a sleeping bag on the floor and walked a block to the convenience store to use the restroom.

While it was tough- my persistence paid off. I increased rent collections, evicted question tenants, and fixed up any of the homes in the park. Things were seeing up.

By Spring my trust had increased and I approached the park owner with a radical idea. I had settled a local mobile home park for sale. The price was right because of a low occupancy rate. I made my move. I suggested that he buy the park- and I carry on it- for a division of ownership. I would work for free- in exchange for a percent of the deal. He liked the idea and I was on cloud nine!

I had gone from being homeless to being on the verge of partnering on a multimillion dollar deal. I couldn't believe how speedily the stuff I'd learned-(goal setting, getting out of your relieve zone, taking huge action) worked. My life had done a 180 and was getting good daily. it seemed as though nothing could go wrong...

One day I got a call from one of my tenants. They said that the carbon monoxide alarm was going off. They called code enforcement- I called person to come and eye it. The inspector found a small leak- and fixed it. I reported all things to the owner of the park.

Then it happened again- someone else report of a leak. I told the owner- he told me to do nothing. The tenants were late in paying their rent and he believed they were sabotaging the house to avoid paying rent. I tried to turn his mind- but he held fast.

As I held the phone in my hand my mind flashed back to the hardships I'd been straight through to get this far. My actions in the next few seconds would decree whether I would soon come to be rich- or homeless again. With all of my time and money invested in the upcoming deal- I took a deep breath -and quit.

I needed to think. The amber sunset framed Pikes Peak and the Rocky Mountains as I walked, silently pondering my predicament. I Believed that all things happened for a reason. I was desperately trying to think of the pearl of wisdom my situation held.

Then I realized that this was an opening to go on to an even greater level of success. "I'd certainly rather be dealing with houses, apartments, and commercial buildings" I belief to myself. "How can I come to be partners with person complicated in these types of properties" I pondered aloud. The cell phone in my pocket started ringing...

I picked up to hear a stranger's voice- and the reply to the query I'd been asking. The man calling me had just opened his desk and found an unopened letter from me. He wanted to know if I could meet with him. I offered to buy evening meal in exchange for the opening to ask him questions about his success.

I met John a few days later at a colse to resident. I ended up running a mile to ensure I made it there on time.I showed up sweaty, red in the face, and with my last dollars in my pocket- and hoped it would be sufficient to pay for dinner!

John was a local multimillionaire real estate investor. He'd started investing in his 20's while in the air force. He told me of the 8 by 30 foot trailer he and hiss wife lived in when he started investing. John said he would save any money he could from his salary as a mechanic- and

He'd scour the base seeing for motorcycles and cars he could buy cheaply. He would fix them up, sell them for a profit, and repeat the process.

His first foray into real estate was the same as mine- buying trailers- fixing them up, and selling for a profit. John got out of the service, moved back home to California, and repeated the process there on the cheapest houses he could find. Over time, he became a realtor, built a family- and ended up with dozens of properties. He had sold most of his properties in California for huge profits, moved to Colorado, and now had over 70 units in his new home.

We discussed my current situation and my goals for the future. I told him of quitting but not that I would be spirited out in a few days-and homeless. We were a good match- I wanted more responsibility and opening while John wanted less responsibility and more time for his family and car collecting hobby. John gave me a ride back to my trailer park, and said he would think about my proposal then get back to me.

Weeks went by with no word from him. I moved out of the trailer and back onto the street. I worked day labor- washing dishes, digging ditches, cleaning up construction sites. I save all the money I made by sleeping out and eating 99 cent burgers. Every night before I went back under the bridge, I would sit in the park, gaze up at the mountains and dream how good it would feel on the day when I got off the street. Holding that hope in my heart I would climb back up the embankment, get into my sleeping bag, and try to sleep as cars whizzed overhead.

I awoke July 4th with a plan. I was going to day labor. If that didn't work out I was going to the dollar store, buying a bunch of glow in the dark necklaces, and selling them in the park at the fireworks display. At that moment, for the fourth time in 6 months, my life changed with the ringing of my cell phone....

I met with John a few hours later. Only a few blocks, yet miles away from where I had been living, was John's garage. I was in wonder as he showed me around. John's personal car collection was housed in a construction taking up 1/4 of a city block. I marveled at the old Porshe's, Jaguar's, Bmw's, Alfa Romeo's, as well as dozens of motorcycles, scooters and other treasures.

John pulled up a incorporate of plastic chairs and handed me a cold diet Coke. " I get a lot of letters" John said, "people see my cars and put all sorts of letters straight through the crack in the door-people seeing for a job, seeing for a handout, wanting me to buy their car..." He gestured at some of his collection and sipped on the soda. "But I've never gotten a letter from person contribution to work for free! " To be be honest- my wife thanks I'm nuts to be here talking to you"

I gulped, my stomach churned and my heart tightened. I had to tell him the truth- that I was homeless. My biggest fear in situations like this was that the other person would look at my financial situation and hold it against me. John knew I had managed a mobile home park-but he didn't know I had slept on the floor of a trailer- and that I was sleeping under a bridge.

I looked John in the eye and told him the truth. I told him how I badly wanted the opening of managing the properties and being his partner- but there were a few things he should know. John nodded silently as I told him about my winter without heat, and of sleeping under a bridge. I told him that I was motivated and would do anything it took to succeed. I also told him that there were many with more perceive who would kill for this opportunity- and that the smart thing for him might be to choose one of them.

John looked at me for what seemed like an eternity, smiled and said- "You're right" "To be be honest- my wife thanks I'm nuts to be here talking to you" " She thinks you're a scammer- that there is no way any regular person could afford to work for free- and that you have some sort of ulterior motive" John stood up, motioned toward his truck, and said "I want to show you something" I followed John, got into the truck, and was soon driving South.

We pulled up in front of a one story apartment construction about a mile away. "How much is this asset worth?" John asked. " I would guess about 0,000" I said. "Pretty good- it appraised for that much! "I paid 0,000 for this place last year"

"remember how I said my wife thanks I'm crazy?" "People told me I was brainless spending my time seeing for cars to fix up- when I could be out partying, they told me I was crazy when I quit my job to spend full time, and now they tell me I'm crazy to trust in person who would pay any price to reach their dreams..."

"I guess I do a lot of brainless things!" And,with that, he handed me a huge key ring- keys to apartments and houses all over the city. " Never forget Anthony-If other population think you're crazy- you just might be on the right track-lets go see your new apartment!"

Not long ago I shared a lunch with John. I had just returned from Hawaii. We sat overlooking the golf course, talking about my adventures, marvelled at how far I'd come ,and shared our dreams for reaching even greater heights...

As you are reading this remember-A journey of a thousand miles begins with a singular step. You must have the faith to take that step, again and agin, and trust that you will at last reach your goal. You may have no idea how to get there, and mountains may rise up to block your path, but nothing is so strong as a a person with a dream in their heart and the courage to pursue it.

Ps-

I owe a lot to John. He taught me how to find great deals on properties, how to turn houses into apartments, how to remodel affordably. He taught me that success is who you are-not where you are, and that the only barriers to success are our own doubt and laziness. Most importantly- he taught me that most successful population don't care where you are- they care where you are going. They will help those who believe in themselves and work hard to perform success.

I hope that by writing this I am able to do just that....
